What is the process to apply for Canada Permanent Residency (PR) status from India?

Migrating to Canada is a dream for Europeans and Asians both. With its advanced economy and multi-culturalism, it promises a world of unexplored opportunities and the warm reception given to the immigrants makes it a paradise that they once dreamt off. For all those people who are planning to immigrate to Canada, there are different portals and avenues available through which a candidate can immigrate, but the best mode of immigration is through the Permanent Residency (PR) status. The PR Status is allotted to candidates for a minimum period of five years, and it entitles them for subsidized education and health care system. The two most popular channels through which a candidate can apply for the Permanent Resident (PR) status of Canada is through –

  • Express Entry program
  • Provincial Nominee Program(PNP).

With the Canada Express Entry Program, the skilled candidate can immigrate to Canada in six months; it is the fastest mode of immigration. Through this model, the candidate is free to settle in any province of Canada. On the other hand, Provincial Nominee Program(PNP) allows selective immigration status to the candidate in which the province which provides the candidates with the nomination it is only that province where the stay is allotted to the candidate. However, there are provisions allotted for migrating to another province as well, but for this there are some criteria that need to be met beforehand.

  • Meeting the CRS score requirement in the Express Entry program

The Express Entry program is well known for the effective and fast processing that it provides to the skilled aspirants. It provides the candidates with the right to settle anywhere in Canada and also offers opportunities to avail benefits which are similar to Canadian citizen rights.

Under the Express entry system of immigration, the candidates are evaluated through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) tool. In this method, the aspiring candidates are ranked and given scores based on the following aspects-

  • Age
  • Language efficiency
  • Work experience
  • Education
  • Arranged employment
  • Adaptability

After calculation of the score on the above-based factors the candidates are judged against one another. Their applications are put in a pool from which the minimum score is calculated for selection. From the express entry pool there is an Express entry draw that is announced after every 15 day’s time and the applicants who have the minimum score as per the draw score they are allotted the ITA (invitation to apply) for the PR status. Ideally, this ITA (Invitation to Apply) needs to be responded in 60 days time by the candidate with documents to further the processing of the application.

The Draw system is not very difficult to comprehend, just the calculation of the score should be correct to evaluate your position. As per the last draws released on 30th January 2019, the minimum score requirement was 438 points, that means that all the candidates with the score of 438 points or higher were eligible for the ITA (invitation to apply)

  • Expression of Interest Point Calculator in PNP

The Expression of Interest (EOI) is the first step when it comes to provincial immigration to Canada in provinces like Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It is a tool that can be directly assessed from the website of the province, and an online profile can be created. Just like in the express entry the candidate will be evaluated as per Age, language work experience, education, and some other factors but here the eligibility criteria for every province will be different and will depend on the labor market requirement of the province.

Why getting an ECA becomes important?

Remember, that Canada government is looking for skilled candidates to immigrate to their country so that they can positively contribute to the economy. Hence, they need to be well educated and skilled with work experience for the profile they are applying at. In this regard, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) of the application of the candidates is highly mandatory. The ECA report will validate that the educational qualification of the candidates is as per the Canadian educational standards or not. Once they have a proper evaluation of their educational degrees/diplomas and certificates from an authorized body like WES they are eligible to apply for the PR status of Canada. WES stands for World Education Services and it is the most trusted body of IRCC for evaluation of education done from outside Canada.

For the candidates who wish to immigrate through the Canada Federal Skilled Workers Program under the express entry system they need to get the ECA done before their applications enter the Express entry pool. For Canada PR visa, process of ECA is very simple, the candidate needs to submit all the documents – transcripts and certificates included to designated organizations. Some of the most popular ones are –

  • World Education Services (WES)
  • Comparative Education Service – University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies
  • International Credential Assessment service of Canada
  • International Qualification Assessment Service
  • Medical Council of Canada
  • Pharmacy examining Board of Canada

Remember that the ECA done should not be more than five years old to be considered valid for further processing. For an ECA the average processing time is around 20 days but the standard time is 40 – 50 days. Hence, if it takes more than a month for the evaluation in certain cases then the candidate should not panic and be patient to wait for their records to arrive after thorough examination.

What is the minimum IELTS score required for Canada PR Visa Process?

Language proficiency is one of the significant criteria for Canada PR (Permanent Resident) visa process from India and is an essential factor in the point calculation. Hence, it is imperative that all aspiring candidates undertake the IELTS exam before immigration. The minimum score requirement, in this case, will depend on the program through which the candidate is applying for immigration and also the overall credentials of the candidate. However, a high band score is always good to enhance the chances of migration. Some provinces even settle for a score as low as 4.5 bands like Saskatchewan for immigration under Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

The candidates also have the option to appear for alternative tests like CELPIP and Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) in place of IELTS but it is more or less the same thing. The table provided below will help you evaluate the test equivalency between CLB and IELTS.
