  • The office of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025. Under this plan, Canada will welcome more than 1.45 million new immigrants from 2023 till 2025 through its economic, family, humanitarian, and refugee class immigration streams. For 2023, it has been targeted to grant visas to as many as 465,000 new immigrants, skilled workers and professionals.
  • The office of IRCC aims to welcome 82,880 new permanent residence status holders; around 105,500 new immigrants and skilled workers through Provincial Nominee Program (PNP); approximately 78,000 through family reunion – spouses and children of primary applicants; and 28,500 through Parents and Grandparents pathway in 2023. Also, the IRCC will welcome over 23,000 extra numbers of immigrants through PNP compared to the federal government-managed Express Entry System in 2023. This shows that Canada is looking forward to welcoming talented and efficient skilled workers and experienced professionals in 2023.
  • The National Occupational Classification (NOC) also shifted focus to Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) to classify and define occupations. This means that the Express Entry System will aim to resolve concerns of Canadian labour markets instead of simply considering overall Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of applicants. The NOC 2021 included as many as 16 new eligible occupations and removed three occupations from the NOC list of eligible occupations for selection of applicants through the Express Entry System. From January 2023, the assessment of candidates will be done on the basis of TEER criteria.
  • The families of LMIA based Work Permit holders are allowed to apply for Open Work permits in Canada. This measure will help the Canadian industries, organisations and labour markets to overcome shortage of efficient manpower. The Canadian Open Work Permit for families of LMIA based work permit holders will come into effect in 2023 in three phases.
  • From November 15, 2022, the eligible international students in Canada are allowed to work for more than 20 hours a week during academic session. This measure will remain valid till December 31, 2023.
