Canadian Experience Class is a subcategory of immigration to Canada with the Permanent Residency (PR) status through the Express Entry Program. It is a program for the foreign nationals who are already residing in Canada on temporary visa or work visa etc. It is a stream for those skilled workers who already have Canadian work experience to their credit and would now like to apply for the PR status of Canada. It is a very important program for temporary foreign workers looking for permanent residency.
Throughout the application process, the candidates can stay in Canada and wait for the allotment of their status. There is an explicit model of selection in this category as per which if the requirements are met then only the candidate is free to enter the pool otherwise not.
Also, one should remember that the experience gained in Canada while being a student or any other sort of self-employment is not considered as an eligible qualifying criterion under this category.
The eligibility for the Canadian Experience Class has some guidelines and for this some of the norms are -
• Full-time experience of a permanent job and the work experience should be of at least one year in an occupation which is listed under the National Occupational Classification list of skill type O (Managerial occupation), A (Professional occupations) or B (Clerical or supportive jobs)
• The candidate should meet the minimum Language proficiency requirement for selection. The language efficiency can be in French or English language, the two official languages of Canada
• The candidate should create an online profile in the express entry program with full details of age, language efficiency, work experience, education, and other detailed information.
• The candidates should have either of three things in the application-
o Letter from Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
o Nomination from a province or territory
o Registration with Employment and Social Development Canada’s (ESDC) job bank.
Before 2015, the Canada Experience Class offered admittance through the candidates on the first come first serve basis. After 2015, the program has started processing the applications as per the express entry program selection model.
The selection procedure entails that there will be the ranking of the candidates as per the credentials and they are judged through the point-based system of Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) in which assessment is done amongst the applications in the pool. There are additional points for Letter from Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or provincial nomination. Then the highest ranking candidates from the pool will be shortlisted after a draw is announced for the minimum score.
Further, these above-mentioned criteria don’t account for Quebec province of Canada which has its own selection model for the skilled workers.
