As a public safety measure, Minister Blair tweeted that the Canadian Government will be extending travel restrictions until July 21.

The restrictions for international travellers will be extended until July 21. Public safety minister Bill Blair announced this news on June 18. Canada will not be entertaining non-essential international travel for some time now.

Blair also stated that the Canadian Government has plans to fully vaccinate its citizens and other temporary residents as well who are currently exempt from the restrictions to enter Canada.

The Tweet by Mr. Blair stated -
Our number one priority as we fight #COVID19 is keeping Canadians safe. In coordination with the U.S., we are extending restrictions on non-essential international travel and with the United States until July 21, 2021.

The details of the vaccination of Canadian Permanent residents and others will be available by June 21. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke about the vaccination status undertaken in two phases. First, the incoming travellers will upload their vaccination documents to the Arrive CAN app. There will be a national certification status acceptable around the world. This will be undertaken with the help of the provinces as the vaccination drive will be spearheaded by the provinces in their area.

Canada will allow the Travellers who have been vaccinated with the following medication-

  • Pfizer
  • Moderna
  • AstraZeneca
  • Johnson and Johnson

The list of exempt travellers at present includes Canadian citizens and permanent residents, their family members, work permit holders, some international students, and some approved permanent residents.

Canada border was closed in March 2020 for non-essential travellers. Since then, there have been rules for travel to Canada like COVID-19 testing before and after arrival and mandatory quarantine. For safety purposes, Canada also closed the border to four major airports.

In fall 2020, there was an expansion on the list of travellers exempt from travel restrictions. International students admitted by a Designated Learning Institution with a COVID-19 readiness plan were allowed to study in Canada. Also, extended family members and travellers coming to Canada for compassionate reasons such as a funeral were allowed.

In Feb. 2021, a mandatory hotel quarantine was added to the list for international travellers. New arrivals were asked to wait in a government-approved hotel at their own expense.
